Playing Cards and Comics: Brawl in the Family Playing Cards by Matthew Taranto

“Brawl in the Family” Playing Cards (Bitf Cards) were created by the American comic artist and writer, Matthew Taranto. The deck is some type of by-product of his parody comic strip dedicated to adventures of many famous Nintendo characters that have appeared in the Smash Bros games.

“Brawl in the Family is a comic strip centering on Kirby and by extension, many famous Nintendo characters that have appeared in the Smash Bros games. There are cameos from other titles as well. The strip began as a series of doodles during one of my many art history classes in college. I was bored one night and doodled up six comics, then put them online on a message board on IGN. From there, people seemed to enjoy them, so I put them up at a few other locations, such as Game FAQs. It began as a comic about the Kirby characters, but once I added the Smash Bros cast (and Kirby’s interaction with them), the scope of the strip expanded significantly.

Most of the characters in Brawl in the Family are parodies of characters that are the property of their respective copyright owners (mostly Nintendo Co. Ltd. and Masahiro Sakurai). This is a parody strip. I did not create the original characters, merely these bizarre interpretations of them.” ~ Matthew Taranto

The comics happened to be so popular that Matthew was able to collect $ 276,502 on Kickstarter (November, 2014) for publishing books with his comics.

The deck: 52 playing cards + 2 different Jokers. Poker size. All faces of the playing cards are custom. Playing cards were printed on cardboard and have some kind of “embossed finish”. Tuck cases are glossy (slightly).

DeviantART: Daredevil Playing Cards by Hannah Friederichs

Hannah Friederichs (AgarthanGuide) is an American artist. She has created several subject playing card artworks. Themes are quite different. Styles are also quite different. The only common thing is her “portrait” approach. But one way courts aren’t always bad 🙂

This post is devoted to her Daredevil playing cards. These are some type of fan art made as playing cards… like her other playing card artworks.

Daredevil is a fictional superhero brought by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett. His first appearance can be found in American comic book, Daredevil #1 (April 1964).

Daredavil is a lawyer, Matt Murdock, in his daily life. Living in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Matt is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle. The radioactive exposure takes his sight, but heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability and gives him a type of sonar which acts as his vision. The superhero fights against his many enemies.

Netflix (an American provider of on-demand Internet streaming media available to viewers) hired Drew Goddard (an American film and television screenwriter, director, and producer) to create web television series devoted to the hero in December 2013. All episodes of the first season premiered on April 10, 2015. The series reveal Murdock’s early days fighting crime, juxtaposed with the rise of crime lord Wilson Fisk. The style of Daredevil was slightly changed – no red tights this time.

“I started with the card dedications given to Fisk and Daredevil and went from there.  I considered expanding it and adding a bunch of other characters, but – no plans as of yet.” ~ Hannah Friederichs

The Jack of Hearts is Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The King of Hearts (senior person?) is his friend and partner in his law firm, Franklin “Foggy” Nelson (Elden Henson). The Queen of Hearts is the secretary for Murdock’s law firm, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). The Queen of Diamonds is Fisk’s love interest, Vanessa Marianna (Ayelet Zurer). The King of Diamonds is Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). The Jack of Diamonds is Fisk’s right hand man, James Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore).
