Playing Card Art: Playing Cards by Molly Maloney

Molly Maloney, an Ameriacan artist, has some stories in her mind which provoke her to design playing cards. Someday she plans to complete a full deck of playing cards devoted to the several stories. Each suit will tell a separate story. Court cards will be devoted to main characters of appropriate stories. Each number card should be a part of the respective story. Molly named only the story for Diamonds, the story of Kaguya Hime. I guess the full set will force the artist to name all stories.

Kaguya Hime (Princess Kaguya), also known as Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), is a 10th-century Japanese folktale. It tells the story about the life of a mysterious girl called Kaguya-hime, who was discovered as a baby inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant.

Bēhance: Irish Legends Playing Cards by Vivian Hansen

These are playing card artworks designed by an American artist, Vivian Hansen. She devoted them to Irish legends and appropriate heroes. The cards feature Cú Chulainn, Queen Méadhbh, Fionn mac Cumhaill, and Áengus. Each character has a story involving some animal. Appropriate animals have been paired with appropriate characters. The stylization is based on the Book of Kells and other illustrated manuscripts featuring Irish myths. Unfortunately, all courts are the same for different suits.

The artist is open for propositions to produce the deck.

DeviantART: Three Musketeers Playing Cards by Hannah Friederichs

Hannah Friederichs (AgarthanGuide) was recently mentioned on pages of this site with her Daredevil playing card artworks. This post is devoted to other playing card artworks created be this American artist. These are also some type of fan art made as playing cards. The same “portrait” approach to courts.

  1. Three Musketeers Playing Cards

The Three Musketeers is a historical adventure novel by a French writer, Alexandre Dumas (24 July 1802 – 5 December 1870). The novel tells about the adventures of a young man named d’Artagnan (The King of Hearts) after he leaves home to travel to Paris with the aim to join the Musketeers of the Guard (a fighting company of the military branch of the Maison du Roi, the Royal Household of the French monarchy). The adventures take place in the 17th century. Three musketeers are d’Artagnan’s friends, Athos (The King of Spades), Porthos (The King of Clubs) and Aramis (The King of Diamonds). Their main adventure is caused by intrigues and queen’s vaudeville at the court of King Louis XIII (The King of Clubs – the second in this pack :)) and Queen Anne of Austria (The Ace of Diamonds?).

D’Artagnan finds and loses his love, Constance Bonacieux (The Queen of Hearts). She was killed by Milady de Winter (should be the Queen of Spades).

Definitely the artworks need additional improvement to become real playing cards. But they are quite nice.

Playing Card Art: Alice and Wonderland Playing Cards by Caroline Halliwell

I have to think that Alice in Wonderland is the most popular theme for custom playing cards. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, primarily known as Lewis Carroll, predestined this with his choice of some of the main characters for the book.

It’s amazing how many different interpretations can invent people. Playing cards can absorb all of them. Unfortunately, not all of them can be produced. Below you can acquaint yourself with familiar characters designed by the British artist, Caroline Halliwell. With the exception of the Queen of Hearts, she sees them as agreeable personalities. The Queen of Hearts is always so displeased. It’s because she can’t understand that radical actions do not guarantee better mood.

These a little bit crazy but symmetrical playing cards were designed by the American artist, Adam Mordecai, and are dedicated to Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. This theme is quite popular for playing cards. These are a working project, so they can be produced some day… in colour.
