Playing Arts Playing Cards by Digital Abstracts

Digital Abstracts, an online platform which provides readers with a blend of design oriented content, managed their first playing card project, Creative Cards Deck, in 2012. The team was so inspired by its results that decided to go on with this approach, and they even invented new brand for the series of projects – “Playing Arts”.

What do they create? Digital Abstracts gathers 54 different international artists in one project. Each artist had to design one of the 54 cards in their distinct style and technique. As the result of this collaboration, we can see a new Collective Art Project (CAP) Deck. In this case, it’s the first edition of Playing Arts Playing Cards.

The deck is planned to be plastic and printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC).

Bicycle Celtic Myth Playing Cards by James Acken (Culturlan.com)

Medieval Studies Professor, James Acken, designed special decks of playing cards devoted to Celtic myth and culture – Bicycle Celtic Myth Playing Cards. The style of the Book of Kells (an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin which is believed to have been created ca. 800 AD. in a Columban monastery in either Britain or Ireland) was used for court cards and different design elements of the deck. Artworks are really rich, but unusual for playing cards. Each court card artwork has a lot of symbols and meaningful elements incorporated into it. All they are nicely explained on Culturlan.com.

There are two editions of these playing cards: Bicycle Symmetrical and Bicycle Asymmetrical Celtic Myth Decks. While Bicycle Symmetrical Celtic Myth Playing Cards have a single figure upon each court card in the style which has become commonplace upon playing cards, Bicycle Asymmetrical Celtic Myth Playing Cards have two figures in opposition to each other upon each court card (see below). Both editions have their unique back designs and Jokers.

These decks are planned to be printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC).

Bicycle Emperor Playing Cards by Joanne Lin

Joanne Lin designed a pack of playing cards with art inspired by ancient Chinese legends – Bicycle Emperor Playing Cards. All characters of court cards – emperors, empresses, generals, and beauties – are from Chinese heritage and culture. Lin’s father has a passion for collecting playing cards, and also loves watching traditional Chinese opera and reading Chinese historical epics. That is why she came up with the idea of combining these two passions to create the deck. There are two editions of these playing cards: Blue and Red Bicycle Emperor Decks.

These decks are planned to be printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC).

Bicycle “Venexiana” Playing Cards by Lotrek (Half Moon Playing Cards)

“Venexiana” – this is how the word “Veneziana” is written in the area of Veneto, in northern Italy. It’s familiar but at the same time strange, exactly as Venice itself. Venice is not just a beautiful city. It’s an impossible invention of time.

Inspired by designer’s love for this aged beauty, “Venexiana” recalls the elegance, playfulness  and mystery of early 18th century Venice. It’s a completely custom deck, and every element, from pips to courts is entirely designed by him. It is planned to be printed by USPCC.

The Type Deck – Typography Playing Cards by Chris Cavill

his deck designed by Chris Cavill to bring something different to the table. It can be the first deck in Typographic category which will be printed by USPCC in case of its successful funding on Kickstarter. Typographic decks in many cases are playing cards with pictures on them composed of letters and numbers of a specific font. These playing cards slightly differentiate this approach as they have letters combined in names of cards as artworks. Different fonts are used. Chris invented a nice idea for his court cards to keep them fitting the theme. I think it is still can be classified as a typographic deck.
