DeviantART: Melancholia Queen of Hearts by Jon Wesley Huff

This Queen of Hearts was designed by an American artist, Jon Wesley Huff (JonWes). It’s inspired by Lars Von Trier’s film, Melancholia, starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård, Cameron Spurr, and Kiefer Sutherland. The film was presented 18 May 2011 at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Dunst (Justine) received the festival’s Best Actress Award.

Melancholia consists of two parts: “Justine” and “Claire”. These are names of two sisters, main heroines of the film. The story revolves around them during and shortly after Justine’s wedding, while an approaching rogue planet is about to collide with Earth.

Trier’s initial inspiration for this film came from a depressive period he suffered and the insight that depressed people remain peaceful in catastrophic events.

Playing Card Art: Pin-Up Playing Cards by Fay Dalton

Fay Dalton is a London-based freelance illustrator, the winner of the 2010 Pickled ink Award. She combines traditional drawing and painting methods with digital painting using Photoshop to achieve Vintage stylised Illustrations. Fay’s works are incredibly detailed and boast a vintage quality, reminiscent of 1950’s Mills and Boon novels and the infamous Coca-Cola adverts.

These are her Pin-Up playing card queens made in her distinctive style. It’s nice to see some “classic” Pin-Up playing card artworks these days. These can be nice queens for some Pin-Up transformation playing card deck.

Bēhance: Citrus and Christian Mythology Playing Cards by Ana Zuniga

Sometimes artists in their search of various artistic forms and senses try to cross completely different things. Here is an example of this. A Costa Rican artist, Ana Zuniga, crossed her vision of Christian Mythology with… citrus plants.

It’s clear that stained-glass windows are strongly associated by her with Christian Mythology. I subjectively can’t say that these court cards unambiguously reflect Christian Mythology because this isn’t the first thing the pictures make me think about. But they definitely are pleasant artworks reflecting the art of stained-glass windows. She nicely incorporated signs of citrus plants into the design of the playing card artworks. Unfortunately, all court cards are almost the same – only “black” and “red” suits are indicated by main green / light-green and orange colours – lime and tangerine with notes of lemon.

These artworks were her academic work. Playing card has the bridge size. The deck hasn’t been produced.
