“I’ve always had an interest in mythology and I have also wanted to create my own playing card designs for a long time, so I made this set as a personal project. I chose to keep the general look and colors of traditional playing cards, but did stylize them and a few additional colors for aesthetic reasons.” ~ Marci Brinker

ACE OF SPADES (Egyptian)
ACE OF HEARTS (Greek)
ACE OF CLUBS (Norse)
ACE OF DIAMONDS (Roman)
OSIRIS – KING OF SPADES
Egyptian God of death, the underworld, the afterlife. His green skin symbolizes rebirth. He wears an Atef crown with two ostrich feathers and holds a crook and flail.
ZEUS – KING OF HEARTS
Greek king of the gods, he is the lord of the sky and the thunderbolt is his weapon.
ODIN – KING OF CLUBS
Chief Norse god, the All-Father and ruler of Asgard, Odin is associated with war, victory, magic, wisdom and poetry. Odin has one eye, having sacrificed the other one for knowledge and wisdom. His spear is called Gungnir. His ravens Huginn (“thought”) and Muninn (“memory”) bring him information.
NEPTUNE – KING OF DIAMONDS
Roman god of the sea, Neptune traditionally carries a trident.
ISIS – QUEEN OF SPADES
Egyptian goddess of the earth, the moon, magic, giver of life. She carries the ankh, which symbolizes eternal life.
ATHENA – QUEEN OF HEARTS
Greek goddess of wisdom, crafts, and war, she was better known for being a diplomat and mediator. She carries a spear, a shield, and wears a warrior’s helmet.
FRIGGA (or FRIGG) – QUEEN OF CLUBS
Norse goddess of love, marriage, destiny. She sits at her spindle weaving the destiny of men and gods.
DIANA – QUEEN OF DIAMONDS
Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and childbirth. She carries a bow and arrow.
HORUS – JACK OF SPADES
Egyptian sky god, the falcon-headed god, child of Osiris and Isis, he wears the red and white crown (pschent) to symbolize kingship over all of Egypt.
APOLLO – JACK OF HEARTS
Greek god of light and truth, Apollo is also the god of music and he carries a golden lyre. Apollo is also known as The Archer.
THOR – JACK OF CLUBS
Norse hammer-wielding god (his hammer is called Mjölnir), associated with thunder, lighting, strength.
MERCURY – JACK OF DIAMONDS
The Roman messenger god, he is also the guide of the dead and protector of merchants. His staff is a caduceus.
LOKI – JOKER (BLACK)
Loki the trickster is the Norse god of mischief and chaos. He is often symbolized by two snakes encircling one another to form an “S” shape.
ERIS – JOKER (RED)
Eris is the Greek goddess of strife and discord. She holds the golden apple of discord and keeps a dagger hidden in her cloak.

Thank you! I just thought I would let you know that I am planning to submit them to House of Playing Cards. I’m working on some very minor revisions to match them to their template and designing the joker cards, and as soon as I finish that, I’ll submit them to HOPC. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Hi again! I submitted my cards to HOPC over a month ago, and other than the confirmation email that they had received them, I didn’t hear anything else so I don’t think they are interested in printing them. I have been researching other options. I’ve been considering a Kickstarter campaign, but it might be a little difficult since I have limited time to devote to it, but I haven’t ruled it out. I also just found http://www.drivethrucards.com and they have a service where they take orders, print cards on demand, and pay their publishers a royalty. The only big drawback I can see is that they don’t offer custom tuck boxes. As collectors, is that a deal breaker for you?
I’d appreciate any thoughts the readers here might have about that. Thanks!

I think, it’s bad idea.. Print on USPCC only. I think you need to write to them again and ask about the result.

Marci, I think you should ask them again. They could be busy with their own cards. I’ll try to help within my opportunities.
I posted about your deck on this forum http://bit.ly/12NpFOe so you can get more opinions of people (people are not very active in commenting on personal blogs).
Concerning small printers – sometimes it’s hard to be sure in quality of their work. USPCC, Cartamundi, Piatnik have quite high standards. Small printers are like a lottery. Also a box can be really important for some categories of playing card collectors. You can be surprised but a lot of people collect sealed decks of playing cards (they don’t open boxes :)). I always open my decks but I also think that playing cards are better with a box.

That’s really good to know. Thank you both for your input. I definitely want to do it right if I’m going to do it, and I appreciate the higher standards that collectors have. I will follow the thread you posted to see what people have to say about it too.
By the way, I’m just about done with the tweaking I’ve been doing for printing, and I designed the joker cards (Loki and Eris, because they are gods/goddesses of chaos and discord, respectively). I’m also working on the arrangement of the pips, and will finish the box next. I’ll let you know when I’ve got them ready to post – I’ll update my Behance page and my website with them soon.
You’re right – maybe I should resubmit to HOPC again. Maybe I gave up on that too easily!

Of course, the HOPC do not have to print any playing cards. But I think to answer questions and to respond to propositions is a good practice for all companies.
