Playing Card Art: The Queen-King of Hearts by Ken Carbone

Ken Carbone of Carbone Smolan Agency created a playful print that riffs off the King and Queen of Hearts. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are depicted on the artwork. It was prepared for celebration of the 100th anniversary of Kahlo’s birth and the 50th anniversary of Rivera’s death sponsored by Alliance Graphique Internationale.

I chose to emulate the structure of a playing card, as it best demonstrates the duality of this royal couple in the history of art” ~ Ken Carbone.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. She suffered lifelong health problems. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo had a volatile marriage with  Diego Rivera – also the famous Mexican artist. Diego’s large wall works in fresco helped establish the Mexican Mural Movement in Mexican art. © Ken Carbone
