Bēhance: Typographic Playing Cards by Michael Lemma

These Optima Typographic playing cards were designed by the American artist Michael Lemma as a project for college. He was assigned Optima type face and had to make playing cards out of the type face. The way he got his shapes and unique look for the face cards was a “happy accident”. Michael hit the align tool in illustrator and got these unique looking shapes. So he played around with different letters & numbers to create an interesting look. The artist decided that red and black colours fit this deck the best.

Michael printed them on cardboard and cut them by himself. But he is going to print them on casino cardboard.

Several playing cards designed by the Puerto-Rican artist Manuel Olmo-Rodriguez as greeting cards for promotional purposes. Manuel was inspired by antique playing cards. Playing cards are based on popular iconic characters from holiday festivities celebrated in Puerto Rico. The first is Santa Claus December 6th and the 24th; then Old and New Years December 31st and January 1st correspondingly; the “Three Wise Men” or ”Three Kings”: Melchior January 7th, Gaspar January 8th and Balthasar January 9th. © 2006 Manuel Olmo-Rodriguez

Bēhance: Philosopher Typographic Playing Cards by Gabrielle Manotoc

These Philosopher Typographic playing cards were designed by the American artist Gabrielle Manotoc for her Typography I class. She was tasked to pick a typeface and using only those specific letterforms, create designs for a deck of playing cards. Gabrielle chose to use the typeface Philosopher. So she named each suit after a famous philosopher. © 2013 Gabrielle Manotoc

Bēhance: Gender Playing Cards by Ignat Plot

These Gender playing cards were designed by the Lithuanian artist Ignat Plot.

On each card you can see a standard gender situation. On small cards (6,7) there are the worths situations (man on sofa, women washing the floor). On middle cards (8,9,10) there are situations that look standard for the society (cooking woman, working man). And on high cards you can see best gender situations (working woman, cooking man). And aces are brilliant – man and women do everything together – gender paradise. This system of cards was created to make a feeling during the game what is good gender situations and what is bad, because in each game you try first throw away small cards and left high cards, and that means that you will throw away bad situations and left better. ~ Ignat Plot

In general this is an interesting concept for playing cards and artworks are also interesting. “…working woman, cooking man…” – the best gender situation? really? I suspect he wanted to say about men supporting women in their striving for some self-realization not only as housewives.
