Playing Card Art: The King of Hearts by Ralph Sevelius

This artwork was created by an American artist, Ralph Sevelius. The King of Hearts was a piece done for Buckhead Church in Atlanta for Easter (2008). They were gathering artworks that displayed Jesus Christ in a creative way.  His starting point for the work was the phrase proposed by the church, “Christ built his ministry on selfless love and acceptance“.

Ralph incorporated several Christianity symbols into the overcoat of the King of Hearts.

Christian cross as a Christian symbol or “seal” came into use at least as early as the second century. It was regarded as a talisman against the powers of demons. Later the cross had become closely associated with Christ.

A symbol consisting of two intersecting arcs that resemble the profile of a fish is the ichthys or ichthus. It’s Greek “ΙΧΘΥΣ” which is an acronym for “Ίησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ” (translates into English as “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour”). It was used by early Christians as a secret Christian symbol. Today it is also called the “sign of the fish” or the “Jesus fish”.

“XP” monogram is formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters chi and rho of the Greek word “ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ” which means Christ. The Chi Rho is one of the earliest forms of christogram (a monogram or combination of letters that forms an abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ).

Bēhance: Pink Floyd Playing Cards by Carmen Wong

These playing card artworks were created by a British artist, Carmen Wong. They are devoted to the 40th Anniversary of a famous English rock band, Pink Floyd. Formed in London, the group was generally recognized in different places of the world due to its progressive and psychedelic music. They became one of the most musically influential groups in the history of popular music.

Four students, Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright, founded the band in 1965. They released their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967. Later that year, David Gilmour became the fifth member of the band. Like many other bands Pink Floyd didn’t have constant numerical composition. But all members were kings :).

The band was inducted into the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

DeviantART: Playing Cards by weirdo-mess

These playing card artworks were created by a Finnish artist, weirdo-mess (nickname). I guess they are devoted to some kind of demons or satyrs. Don’t be surprised. In accordance with Greek mythology in 6th-century BC, human legs were common for satyrs.  They acquired their goat-like aspect through later Roman conflation with Faunus, a half-men, half-goats in Roman mythology. Satyrs became nearly identical with fauns under the influence of Roman mythology. So, satyrs commonly described in Latin literature as having the upper half of a man and the lower half of a goat, with a goat’s tail in place of the Greek tradition of horse-tailed satyrs

Playing Card Art: The Queen of Clubs by Mark Bell

This Queen of Clubs was designed by a British artist, Mark Bell (Galvanise The Dog), as an art print. No indices, quasi-tangible body of the queen with a mysterious face. It’s interesting. You can add white border with indices and you’ll get a nice card for some Collective Art Project (CAP) deck of playing cards.
