HOPC: Curator Deck by Emmanuel José

Emmanuel José graduated with a degree in Studio Art from DavidsonCollege, where he created drawings, prints and paintings. During his undergraduate years, he was introduced to the technique of papercutting.

In 2011, a longtime fascination with playing cards prompted Emmanuel to set up a personal challenge: Create 1 playing card a week, culminating in a complete deck of transformation playing cards***.

Using papercutting techniques, Emmanuel follows a centuries-old tradition of transforming the suits and pips of a standard deck of playing cards.

Through the creation of these decks, Emmanuel hopes to present playing cards not as mere objects, but as canvases ripe for creativity and a little imagination.” ~ Emmanuel José

Playing Card Art: “Eric Cantona – The King” by Miniboro

This playing card artwork is dedicated to one of the most famous football players of Manchester United (British football club), Eric Cantona. He won with MU four Premier League (an English professional league for men’s association football clubs) titles in five years and two League and FA Cup Doubles (an annual knockout cup competition in English football).

Callum Hamilton over at the tremendous Surreal Football asked if I’d have a go at doing an Eric Cantona piece to compliment his latest Approved XI article. You’d think a character as huge as Cantona would be an easy option but it actually proved to be the opposite.

My starting point was his ‘King Eric’ nickname so having him as the King in a deck of cards seemed a fairly straight forward premise.

The main issue was coming up with a pattern that would make up the rest of the card. It’s probably no great surprise i went down the “seagulls follow the trawler” route, so I decided to throw in the ball and trident from the Man Utd badge for good measure, the trident also doubles up as a King Neptune nautical reference.

I tried to keep his features as minimal as possible (apart from the iconic mono-brow of course) so that hopefully the eye is drawn around the pattern rather than settling on one part.” ~ Miniboro

Eric Cantona is quite popular for playing card artworks created by different artists. And he is always the King.

DeviantART: Eric Cantona King of Club by UtdNation

Tom (UtdNation) is a British artist. He created a playing card artwork devoted to Eric Cantona, an iconic figure for a British football club, Manchester United. Eric finished his football career in 1997. Now he tries himself in cinema (for example, the 1998 film Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett).

MU’s fans nicknamed him “King Eric”. Eric was voted as Manchester United’s greatest ever player by Inside United magazine (the official magazine of the club).

Eric Cantona, the King of Old Trafford is fittingly portrayed here as the King of club[s] on this playing card.” ~ Tom

Old Trafford is a football stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It has been MU’s home ground since 1910 (the only break was from 1941 to 1949, as a result of bomb damage during the Second World War). It is the second-largest football stadium in the United Kingdom.

Eric Cantona was featured by several artists as a playing card King.

Bēhance: Hungarian Playing Cards by Barbara Bernát

I decided to  design a new set of Hungarian cards, or Tell-cards for this year’s school assignment. We had to create something which can be connected to the art nouveau movement of Hungary. Some of the figure cards feature hungarian and international artists of this style of art, the aces symbolize the four seasons. The deck contains 32 illustrated black-and-white cards.” ~ Barbara Bernát
