* Oskar Schlemmer (4 September 1888 – 13 April 1943) was German painter, sculptor, designer and choreographer associated with the Bauhaus school. In 1923 he was hired as Master of Form at the Bauhaus theatre workshop. His most famous work is “Triadisches Ballett,” in which the actors are transfigured from the normal to geometrical shapes.
** Staatliches Bauhaus (commonly known simply as Bauhaus) was a school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933 (it was closed under pressure from the Nazi regime). At that time the German term Bauhaus, literally “house of construction”, stood for “School of Building”.
The Bauhaus school was founded by the architect, Walter Gropius, in Weimar. But the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during the first years of its existence. It was founded with the idea of creating a “total” work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. So it has its own theatre.
The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design and typography.
