Bēhance: Four Horses Playing Cards by Kerri Cordeiro

These playing card artworks are designed by an American artist, Kerri Cordeiro. She created artworks for a full poker deck. Courts feature silhouettes of horses. Horses in queen cards have signs of femininity. The name of these playing cards forces to think that all four jacks, queens and kings should be different. Unfortunately, Kerri hasn’t revealed all court cards.

The strongest part of this pack of playing card artworks is number cards. It’s hard to say how logically enough they are connected with horses, but they are nice semi-transformation playing cards represented by beautiful plants (branches of trees). Unfortunately, the plants don’t have anything common with grass, hay or grains – natural food for horses. So, a “dietetic” connection doesn’t work. But it could. Horses are herbivores and have a unique digestive system which requires a high-fiber diet that is consumed in small amounts over a long time. That’s why they actually spend most of their time eating. Maybe we should accept those plants as some symbolic food for horses.

This is her second pack of playing card artworks. The first one, Monogrammed Playing Cards (now she names it Cocktail playing cards), has been already featured on pages of this site.

Preview: Poker Faces Playing Cards by Verlag um die Ecke

A small publishing company from the most western part of Germany, “Verlag um die Ecke“ (roughly translated from German into English as “Publisher around the corner“), which specializes on family magazines and different guides decided to create some side project devoted to playing cards. The team of three people – publisher, graphic designer and illustrator – launched a custom deck of playing cards called “Poker Faces”.

Poker Faces playing cards were designed for nonconservative poker players with developed sense of humor. “Poker face”, also known as a blank expression, is a special term for poker which means a facial expression characterized by neutral positioning of the facial features, implying a lack of strong emotion. As you can see, quite quirky and bizarre characters of this deck are far away from a lack of strong emotions 🙂 While the Jack of Spades is just thinking about his possible victim, ladies mercilessly are shooting flirtatious glances at everyone. And think twice before surprise the Jack of Diamonds by your Royal Flush 😉

“Tough guys and loose women, Bartenders, Mafia Brides and Sailors! In a POKER FACES poker hand, the underworld and harbor romance meet. Each of the four colors represents an “industry”: clubs is maritime, spades is organized crime, the pimps and alley cats romp around with hearts, and in the diamond pub, everyone is sitting at the bar.” ~ Verlag um die Ecke

The contrast was intentional. The creators wanted to have professional deck for poker with some ironical twist. I have to admit that they did what they wanted.

All drawings are the work of the Aachen-based illustrator Alex Elsen.

Kickstarter: The Four Seasons Playing Cards by Ace Collectable Cards

Ace Collectable Cards (Justin) designed a deck of playing cards, The Four Seasons, to celebrate the four seasons. The four suits of it represent a different time of year while the standard fifty two card deck is used to represent each week of the year. This deck will have also four Jokers representing each season and devoted to four chosen backers of this Kickstarter campaign. All elements of this deck are custom. The designer tried to incorporate a lot of classic symbols of appropriate seasons into each suit of it. Courts resulted to be very emotional characters.

The Four Seasons playing cards are planned to be printed by the Expert Playing Card Company (EPCC).

“There is no season such delight can bring,
As summer, autumn, winter, and the spring.”
~ William Browne*, “Variety” (1630)
