Bēhance: Typographic Playing Cards by Michael Lemma

These Optima Typographic playing cards were designed by the American artist Michael Lemma as a project for college. He was assigned Optima type face and had to make playing cards out of the type face. The way he got his shapes and unique look for the face cards was a “happy accident”. Michael hit the align tool in illustrator and got these unique looking shapes. So he played around with different letters & numbers to create an interesting look. The artist decided that red and black colours fit this deck the best.

Michael printed them on cardboard and cut them by himself. But he is going to print them on casino cardboard.

Bēhance: Philosopher Typographic Playing Cards by Gabrielle Manotoc

These Philosopher Typographic playing cards were designed by the American artist Gabrielle Manotoc for her Typography I class. She was tasked to pick a typeface and using only those specific letterforms, create designs for a deck of playing cards. Gabrielle chose to use the typeface Philosopher. So she named each suit after a famous philosopher. © 2013 Gabrielle Manotoc

Typographic Playing Cards: Deck # 2 by P22 Type Foundry

P22 Type Foundry creates computer typefaces inspired by art and history and is renowned for its work with museums and foundations to ensure the development of accurate historical typefaces that are fully relevant for today’s computer user.

This is the second typographic deck by P22 Type Foundry. The company held a contest in 2008 to collect different designs from different artists for this deck. A panel of well-respected typophiles chose one card for each of the 52 cards and jokers. The artists had to meet the following main requirements:

  • They had to consider proper characteristics (One Eye Jack, Suicide King, etc) for specific cards;
  • They had to pick a P22 font or font set (licensed) that they have a certain fondness for;
  • Design had to be sensitive to the font chosen and highlight its best features;
  • All number cards and aces should use only Red and Black (grey);
  • All cards should have different fonts involved (in spite of that the Costructivist font used twice).

The deck: 52 playing cards + 3 different Jokers + information card + P22’s card-licence. Poker size. Playing cards are printed on casino cardboard with a glossy finish.

Bēhance: Caslon Pro Playing Cards by Sara Wasserboehr

This project consists of the creation of a typographic playing cards based on a typeface given to the student by lottery. The student selects the theme, motif and approach to create an attractive design made of type ONLY. They are not allowed to use shapes, illustrations or any other element that is not typographic.

These are typographic playing cards based on the TV series “Supernatrual”. Sara (US) wanted her cards to feel creepy with religious undertones. Each suit’s colours were chosen based on the four categories of creatures that are featured in Supernatural: monsters (green and red), demons (red and purple), spirits (purple and blue), and angels (blue and gold). Typeface: Caslon Pro.

Supernatural is an American supernatural drama television series created by Eric Kripke (first broadcast on September 13, 2005). The series follows two brothers as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters and other figures of the supernatural. It is produced by Warner Bros. Television (in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision).
