Collective Art Project (CAP) Deck: Gig Posters Playing Cards #1

Gigposters_logoGigposters.com is a Canadian site dedicated to the artists, designers and musicians who create gig posters to advertise shows and events. It is some kind of international community for these categories of people. They are concentrated on music events. You can submit your works and take part in the community for free. Gig Posters accepts gig poster, flyers and handbills. They do not accept promotional, non-music related posters or posters for shows that did not happen. There must be at least one musical performer listed on the poster. (a band or DJ).

From time to time Gig Posters selects some artworks and produces a deck of playing cards. There are three decks at this moment. And this article is dedicated to the first one which was printed in 2005 (two other decks will be described on pages of this blog as well) – Gig Poster Playing Card Deck 1.

The deck: 52 playing cards with different artworks + 2 Jokers with different artworks + ad card. Bridge size. Playing cards are printed (by TMPC) on cardboard and have a glossy finish. The tuck case (designed by The Decoder Ring Design Concern) has also a glossy finish.

The tuck case is clickable

Printissa: Kashmir Playing Cards

This deck was printed by Printissa (Saint Petersburg, Russia) in 2005. It was extremely limited run of 500 copies.

I am not absolutely sure but as I know Printissa was a collective of former employees of the Colour Printing Plant (1817-2004). The Colour Printing Plant had the same historic meaning for the Russian Empire, the USSR and Russia as the United States Playing Card Company had (has) for the United States. But while USPCC was and is mainly concentrated on playing cards for casinos and magicians/cardists, doesn’t have a lot of really and fully custom decks, CPP was mainly concentrated on fully custom artistic decks.

There are several notes about CPP’s decks on pages of this blog. Unfortunately CCP was closed in 2004. Several former employees organized Printissa and tried to go on with artistic decks. They printed several interesting decks. The company was reorganized into RusJoker (Saint Petersburg, Russia) in 2006. The last one was closed in 2008.

These playing cards were designed by Lev Liberman. As you can see Printissa kept the best traditions of CCP in designing of playing cards. The deck is dedicated to the north-western region of the Indian subcontinent – Kashmir. It is also called the Heaven on Earth because of its natural widespread beauty. So this deck is Lev’s artistic vision of Kashmir.

The deck: 52 playing cards + 2 Jokers. Bridge size.

Kickstarter: Bicycle Venexiana Deck by Half Moon Playing Cards

The designer of Timeless deck and Butterfly deck made for RSVP Magic decided to propose people his own project – Bicycle Venexiana Playing Cards.

“Venexiana” – this is how the word “Veneziana” is written in the area of Veneto, in northern Italy. It’s familiar but at the same time strange, exactly as Venice itself. Venice is not just a beautiful city. It’s an impossible invention of time.

Inspired by designer’s love for this aged beauty, “Venexiana” recalls the elegance, playfulness and mystery of early 18th century Venice. It’s a completely custom deck, and every element, from pips to courts is entirely designed by Lotrek (the designer and owner of Half Moon Playing Cards). It is planned to be printed by USPCC.

Lo Scarabeo: Liberty Playing Cards

Some decks of playing cards produced by Lo Scarabeo (Italy) have already been mentioned on pages of this blog. This post dedicated to another deck by Lo Scarabeo – Liberty Playing Cards.

Art by Antonella Castelli is featured on these playing cards. The artist was inspired by works of the Czech Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha.

Art Nouveau, Liberty, Floral Style, Modern Style, Jugendstil: these are the various definitions of a single style which positioned itself in Europe and the United States around 1900, especially in the field of applied arts (such as illustration) and architecture. Its characteristic floral, stylized and allusively symbolic curved lines which develop into asymmetrical and two-dimensional decorations also forcefully entered the world of production in a profitable encounter between industry and art. This splendid deck of cards pays tribute to the Liberty utopia with the elegant and light graphics of this style.

The deck:

  • 52 different illustrated playing cards;
  • 2 different Jokers;
  • 1 ad card;
  • 5 information cards (traditionally for Lo Scarabeo in English, Italian, Spain, French and German);
  • Bridge size;
  • Printed on casino cardboard with smooth finish.
