Collective Art Project (CAP) Deck: Design with Purpose Playing Cards

This playing card project was organised by Jacqui Stuart (via Facebook page) as part of the Design with Purpose community. It was created for charity with all the profits going to the non profit organisation called Forest & Bird (New Zealand). Jacqui participated as the manager of this project and as an artist. Different designers, illustrators and artists from many different places around New Zealand and the word took part in this project. All their artworks were incorporated in the deck of playing cards produced in 2012 – Design with Purpose Playing Cards.

Forest & Bird is New Zealand’s longest-serving conservation organisation, formed in 1923 (they celebrate 90 years in 2013) in response to widespread extinction of native species and destruction of native forests. Since then their role has grown to include protection of all native flora and fauna on land and in oceans (New Zealand’s territory covers an area of ocean many times greater than their land mass), lakes and rivers of New Zealand. Forest & Bird has played an active role in preserving New Zealand’s environment and native species. They have helped establish protection for a third of their country’s land in parks and reserves, put an end to logging of their native forests and helped bring species such as the kakapo and kokako back from the brink of extinction.

The deck: 52 playing cards with different artworks + 2 different Jokers + 1 insert. Playing cards are printed by GEON (New Zealand) on cardboard and have a smooth finish (the same about the tuck case). The internal space of the tuck case hasn’t enough height so there are some problems with putting cards in the tuck case and pulling them out it. Due to that the isert for this deck isn’t in the tuck case. It is attached to the box in simple but creative way – see the picture.

USPCC: Discoverie Deck by Vanishing Inc. Magic and BBM

Big-Blind-Media-LogoThis article I want to dedicate to the result of collaboration between Vanishing Inc. Magic and Big Blind Media – Discoverie Deck [find it here or here]. There were several articles dedicated to BBM’s playing cards on pages of this site. But Vanishing Inc. Magic is a new guest on the site.

Vanishing_Inc

Founded by Joshua Jay and Andi Gladwin, Vanishing Inc. Magic is a magic website that presents different goods related to magic (magic tutorials, books, video lessons, small magic things, playing cards, etc.). These guys make use of their experience to select interesting magic products for their site. And they have enough experience as: a) Joshua Jay is an American performer, lecturer and columnist in MAGIC Magazine (his column – “Talk about Tricks”); b) Andi Gladwin is a UK-based entrepreneur and professional close-up magician. One of the main features of their site is a lot of video demonstrations of products they propose.

The deck is consecrated to The Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scot. The first edition was printed in 1584. It was one of the first books written in the English language which made serious mention of magic. The book showed a superstitious public that magicians were not witches, but entertainers with thought-out effects and methods. So Vanishing Inc. Magic and Big Blind Media decided to commemorate such moment in history of magic with these playing cards produced in 2013 (you will be able to commemorate 490 years of the book… but in 2014 😉 ).

The English artist Sam Hayles (DOSE Productions) who traditionally design decks for Big Blind Media had his hand in this deck of playing cards.

The Deck: 52 playing cards + 2 different Jokers + 1 information card + 1 illustrated card. Poker size. Playing cards were printed by USPCC on Bicycle Stock and have the Air-Cushion finish.

Typographic Playing Cards: Hat-Trick Deck

These nice Hat-Trick typographic playing cards were designed by Jim Sutherland from Hat-Trick design (UK). Jim made 50 copies of the deck for friends and colleagues (first edition). This is the second limited edition – 1000 copies were produced.

The deck: 52 different playing cards + 2 different Jokers + 1 information card (sketches) + 1 ad card. Bridge size. Playing cards printed on solid cardboard and have a smooth finish (plastic coated). This deck has very interesting plastic coating. It is the same for cards and the box. You can find such coating on covers of some modern books. It makes cards quite stiff. Playing cards are pleasant by touch.

Fournier: Alice in Wonderland Playing Cards

These playing cards were printed by Fournier (Spain) in 2010. They are dedicated to Burton’s filming of the famous Carroll’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pseudonym Lewis Carroll) was an English author who wrote the novel in 1865. Playing cards are among heroes of this novel. That is why it became quite popular for designing different custom decks (Nicole’s Alice in Wonderland deck, Bicycle The White Rabbit deck).

Timothy Walter “Tim” Burton is an American film director, film producer, artist, writer and animator. He has his own specific style of horror and fantasy movies. As a rule his films are full of dark, gothic, macabre and quirky elements. So Tim’s Alice in Wonderland (2010) happened to be a quite unique interpretation of the novel supported by Walt Disney Pictures and some other companies.

The deck: 52 different playing cards + 3 Jokers + 1 ad card. Poker size. Playing cards are printed on casino cardboard and have a smooth finish. The box has Fournier’s traditional design.
