Bēhance: Philosopher Typographic Playing Cards by Gabrielle Manotoc

These Philosopher Typographic playing cards were designed by the American artist Gabrielle Manotoc for her Typography I class. She was tasked to pick a typeface and using only those specific letterforms, create designs for a deck of playing cards. Gabrielle chose to use the typeface Philosopher. So she named each suit after a famous philosopher. © 2013 Gabrielle Manotoc

The Perfect Pair Playing Cards by Rule29

Rule29 is the American design studio. Teaming up with Just For Kicks and O’Neil Printing, the studio set out to create a deck of cards to capture their love for games and fresh Kicks. From the beginning, the Perfect Pair deck was designed to be as usable as possible. The one-eyed jacks are present, as is the one-eyed king. Each face card was given a name after a type of person that loves their shoes: “The Athlete,” “The Congressman,” “The Writer,” “The Fashionista,” etc. The remaining 36 cards each feature a different shoe profile to complete the unique deck.

The deck: 52 playing cards + 4 Jokers. Poker size. There were printed 2,500 decks in 2012.

Rule29 decided to create a special box for these playing cards. It nicely imitates a shoe box.

Quick Note: Scopa Playing Cards by thespiel on Kickstarter

From Magellan to the modern day, Scopa, the classic Italian card game, has been enjoyed for nearly 500 years. Players capture cards from a central area to score points at the end of each round or “sweep” the table clean of cards (Scopa means sweep in Italian). The first player to collect 11 points over a series of rounds wins the game.

Scopa is played with a 40 card deck, 10 cards in four different suits. The suits in a traditional Scopa deck are swords, cups, clubs (literal clubs), and coins. Each suit has cards ranked from ace to seven and three face cards: The King, The Knight, and The Squire (or in some decks, The Lady).

This Gamer’s Edition of Scopa replaces the traditional suits with game components: dice, dominoes, clubs (the card suit), and meeples. Here are some examples of the new suit designs and artwork.
